E L U S I O N
Elusion explores the emotions we feel when experiencing beautiful environmental landscapes through physical and virtual worlds. In today’s society physical and virtual worlds are becoming more interchangeable and people are becoming less concerned about the difference between the two. My research explores these ideas and the overlaps and levels of deception they can create when experiencing the beauty of nature’s landscapes through separate realties.

The Effect of
Aesthetics
"Environmental aesthetics is an area of philosophy that considers how humans directly and indirectly experience environments, landscapes, and species and the types of aesthetic judgements that follow from these experiences." People tend to judge a sunset to be "beautiful" or a mountain landscape to be "sublime." Overall aesthetics help to understand how people relate to, experience, and value environments and nature.
Firsthand vs. Secondhand
The idea of “firsthand” vs “secondhand” helps us understand the difference between a personal experience vs. a shared experience. Firsthand describes a moment when we see an environment or landscape directly in front of us which allows us to fully appreciate the surroundings of an environment. Secondhand experiences happen through photos or videos that are shared on platforms like Instagram, that still allow us to have an aesthetic experience, but virtually.
Vicariously Living
Specific Instagram accounts like Earth, National Geographic, and travel influencers give us the opportunity to see the worlds landscapes through what they post. These accounts give us a glimpse into what some people are seeing firsthand and giving us a chance to experience it secondhand. Places like Instagram allow us to live vicariously though others posts which has some negatives and positives. Social media can blur the lines between "a photo being a representation of an experience, but not the experiences itself."
